Discovery at Sept 2013 Hood River Fly-In

In Journal, Flying by Steve Sliwa

Nancy and I stopped by the Hood River Fly-In yesterday to check-out the planes (many from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s) and to have some lunch. Just next to where we sat down for lunch was a book collection section with about 4 tables of old aviation books and magazines they were selling.

I walked over to the first table and there were some old Soaring Magazines. They were on sale 5 for $1. Most were missing their covers as some people just collect the beautiful sailplane pictures on the cover.

On top of the stack was this one pictured below:

Amazing. The actual article, which I wrote while in college, was missing from my online publications list, so I was able to add it.

What a coincidence to just walk over the table and see this. I actually contributed 2 other soaring magazine articles but I didn’t search the stacks for those. 🙂

The article itself (also attached here: Sliwa – Cross-Country Soaring – 1976) has some interesting historical references, such as: “with over 200,000 computers in the US” and sit at your “teletype” and etc. Those were the days…
