Title | Story |
Being Born | Honey was born about 5 doors down in Yorktown, Virginia. Her mother was Tiffany (see pictures of her playing with Tiffany in her ‘Early Years Album). Tabitha and I came down to the house to see the litter being born. |
Nancy is Won Over by Honey | Nancy said no dogs! She did admit she might like a Golden Retriever on day. We couldn’t get her to go and visit the puppies. I thought it might help us get one in a year or two. She finally went when they were 4 weeks old and came back. She announced that Honey would be coming home in about 3 weeks. |
Pick of the Litter | My goal is normally to get the healthiest female runt of the litter. This one will really be full of life. The breeders didn’t want us to take Honey, because she was the most rambunctious and was always underfoot and in trouble most of the time. They thought they should sell her to a family ‘far away’ so they wouldn’t hear about the problems. We refused to relent. |
First Week | The first week we had her at 7 weeks old, we knew we had a winner. She was already housebroken and would do simple commands that Steve had taught her. She would ‘Come’ faster than her mother would when they were playing together and both were called at the same time. Of course she had to take about 5 steps to her mom’s 1 and it was a real ‘puppy effort’ to beat her. |
Chewing Paper from the Garbage | Honey had one bad habit her whole life. She liked to get into the garbage and chew the paper. In her later years she might not do it for 9 months or more. She knew it was wrong afterwards, but she just wanted to do it. Sometimes she would do it when she was mad at us. She did it once about a week before the end and I really had a chuckle. Here is a 98 year old dog, in person years, still getting into mischief. |
Swimming Puppy | Our SEI office manager, Dorothy Wilkinson, was letting Honey the puppy out for walks and was taking her for walks during lunch time. She was a cat person and not too familiar with dogs. One time when Honey was 3 months old she said, ‘Man your dog likes to swim!’ I was shocked. Turns out she had been walking her near our lake and she threw a stick in and she had swum out after it. |
Crab Dog | On the Florida beaches at night, sand crabs would come out. She used to like to tease them until one time a giant one bit her and ran into the water through her legs. She went into the ocean, put her head underwater and threw it up on the shore. “We are not done playing until I say we are done playing!” A little later she discovered it had been ‘broken’. Once she got the taste of ‘crab blood’, that was it. She would love to go on the beach. I would shine the flashlight and she would spot one and run after it. Bang! It usually would be done for in about 1 or 2 seconds. |
Pools | Honey loved swimming. She had a favorite frog toy and would love you to throw it in. She would jump after it and bring it back to you ready to go again. She was really into spectacular dives and wanted to catch it in the air. |
Vets | Vets loved Honey because she would learn the routine so quickly. She would wait in her seat, come in when called, go to the scale and get up on it to be weighed, then find the empty room, and wait to be examined. |
Running | Honey has literally run thousands of miles with me while I jogged. We used to run hills in California and really enjoyed the time together. I had a command called ‘Switch’, which meant run on the right side. ‘Heel’ was for running on the left side. |
Sleeping Together | Honey slept with us in our bed for about 13 years. She would usually cuddle between our legs and was especially great company when one of us was on travel. |
